《113-2 SA Event》Exchange Online Sharing: “Exploring the World Through Exchange”
Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity to grow academically and personally. To help students understand what it’s like to study in another country, on March 4th, 2025, we were delighted to have an online sharing session featuring Onica Liu 劉耑妍, a GHRM MBA graduate with rich exchange experiences.
One Year, Two Continents: Onica’s Exchange Journey
During her MBA studies, Onica had the unique experience of studying in two different countries within a year. She spent the Fall 2023 semester at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the Spring 2024 semester at Yonsei University in South Korea. Through these experiences, she explored different cultures, adapted to new learning environments, and developed a global mindset.
Life as an Exchange Student in the Netherlands
Studying at the University of Groningen was Onica’s first exchange experience. She chose the Netherlands because of English-friendly environment, and convenient travel access across Europe. While there, she faced several challenges, including:
- Adapting to a new education system with different teaching methods and grading styles.
- Living without a bicycle in a city where cycling is the main form of transportation.
- Managing expenses, as the cost of living was higher than in Taiwan.
- Lifestyle, which she mention as the party culture is common and she feel disturbed of her neighbor who had this habit.
Despite these challenges, Onica made the most of her time abroad. She traveled to 15 countries during her exchange period, gaining invaluable experiences and making lifelong memories.
Studying in South Korea: A New Cultural Experience
After completing her semester in the Netherlands, Onica continued her exchange journey in South Korea at Yonsei University, one of the country’s most prestigious institutions. She selected Yonsei because of top-ranked university, modern campus, and vibrant student life. In South Korea, Onica faced different challenges:
- Course selection difficulties, as popular courses filled up quickly.
- Language barriers, since some administrative tasks required Korean language skills.
- Adjusting to local food, as she found it difficult to find fresh fruits and vegetables.
However, the benefits of studying in Korea outweighed the difficulties. She enjoyed the campus environment, made new friends, and explored Seoul’s dynamic culture.
Tips for Future Exchange Students
Throughout the session, Onica shared valuable advice for students considering an exchange program:
- Plan ahead: Research exchange opportunities, course credits, and required documents early.
- Manage finances wisely: Budget for living expenses, travel, and unexpected costs.
- Step out of your comfort zone: Be open to new experiences, meet local students, and embrace cultural differences.
- Stay flexible and positive: Challenges are part of the journey, but they help you grow.
“Stay safe! Remember to keep your awareness of your surroundings wherever you go and
keep your attention of your belongings every time”
– Onica Liu 劉崙妍
Lastly, Onica encouraged students by concluding that studying abroad is a chance to step out of your comfort zone, a change that will broaden your perspective, and a challenge that will help you grow—so embrace every new experience, and most importantly, enjoy every moment of your exchange!
